Ronaldinho to Fluminense: Remembering joy and pure talent

Like so many Brazilians before him, Ronaldinho learned his skills in beach football. He quickly made his name at the Porto Alegre club Gremio. His ball skills and a flair for scoring spectacular goals attracted worldwide attention after he made his national debut in 1999 and he decided to try his luck in Europe with Paris Saint-Germain.

After top-scoring at the 1999 Confederation Cup, Ronaldinho joined Ronaldo and Rivaldo at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, where he played a leading part in Brazil’s successful campaign. He also provided one of the tournament’s enduring images with an audacious free kick which drifted over a frantically back-pedaling England goalkeeper David Seaman in the quarter-finals.

Ronaldinho joined Barcelona in 2003 and in his first season inspired the Catalan club to 17 consecutive matches without defeat and to second place in the league. The following season they went one better and in December 2004 Ronaldinho was named FIFA player of the year, an award he won again in 2005.

Barcelona claimed European club football’s greatest prize in 2006 when they beat Arsenal 2-1 in the Champions League final. But in the World Cup later that year Ronaldinho, in common with his teammates, was uncharacteristically subdued and although he started all of Brazil’s five matches he failed to score a goal.

In 2008 he left Barcelona to join Milan and then Flamengo, Atletico Mineiro, Queretaro and now Fluminense but he hasn’t produced his top form after leaving the Catalans.

Ronaldinho will be remembered for his pure talent, no-look passes, tricks, and his courage to try his magic on biggest stages.

“Hugo Sánchez, the Mexican Pichichi”

“Hugo Sánchez, the Mexican Pichichi”

Editorial by : Jonathan Zielanowski ; Twitter ID: @Jonathan_Ziela

Hugo Sánchez was born on July 11th 1958, he began his professional career in Mexico in 1976 with UNAM, in 1979 Hugo was loaned to San Diego Sockers and in 1981 he emigrated to Spain to play with Atletico de Madrid where he played 4 years and won Copa del Rey and Spanish Super cup, he also won his 1st Pichichi trophy as top goal scorer of the tournament.

On July 15th, 1985 (30 years ago) he signed with Real Madrid, he was part of “La quinta del Buitre” along next to Emilio Butragueño, Manuel Sanchis, Martin Vasquez, Michel and Miguel Pardeza, togetter they won 5 consecutive La Liga titles between 1985 and 1990.

Hugo is one of 24 players to have played for both, Real and Atletico de Madrid.

Hugo won 4 consecutive Pichichi trophies, being the only player in history to do so and becoming just 1 of 3 players to win a total of 5 Pichichi’s (along with Alfredo Di Stefano and Quini). He also won 1 European Golden Boot (only 2 players have won it while playing for Real Madrid, him and Cristiano Ronaldo).

In addition to 5 La Liga titles, he won 3 Spanish Super Cups, 1 Copa del Rey and 1 UEFA Cup. Hugo Sánchez is the 3rd best goal socrer in La Liga history with 234 goals, just behind Telmo Zarra with 251 and Lionel Messi with 286 (and still active).

Hugo is the 6th best goal scorer in Real Madrid’s history with 208 goals and 9th best goal scorer in the history of “El Clásico” against Barcelona with 10 goals.

Real Madrid all-time goal scorers:

                                             Goals                    Appearances

Raúl González Blanco          323                         741

Cristiano Ronaldo                 313                         300

Alfredo Di Stefano                 307                         396

Carlos Santillana                   289                         645

Ferenc Puskás                      242                         262

Hugo Sánchez                       208                         282

With arguments, Hugo Sánchez is probably the best Mexican to ever played in Europe, some may also say he is in the top two along Rafael Márquez. Nevertheless when you talk about Mexican footballers you have to talk about Hugo Sánchez, when you talk about Real Madrid’s history, Hugo Sánchez’s name will come out, when you talk about the best goals and the most beautiful bicycle goals there is no one better than Hugo, just take a moment and remember that amazing goal he scored against Logroñes at the Santiago Bernabeu on April 10th 1988, one of the best goals ever.

“O Captain! My Captain!

“O Captain! My Captain!

Real Madrid, at the verge of a new era”

Editorial by : Jonathan Zielanowski ; Twitter ID: @Jonathan_Ziela

Real Madrid is about to make a huge change, something that will definitely change the curse of the team, a very important era in Madrid is coming to an end, if someone asks you to say one of Real Madrid’s biggest players of all time, you will definitely think about Iker Casillas (at least in the top 5). After 16 years with the club, the goalkeeper will leave the team the same way Raul did it, through the back door. Something they absolutely didn’t deserve.

Casillas made his senior debut for Real Madrid in 1999, at 18 years old. He played 16 seasons in which he won 18 titles, including 3 UEFA Champions League. He was Real Madrid’s captain since 2010, Casillas played in 725 games with Real Madrid in all competitions (2nd all-time behind Raul with 741).

Casillas has played in 150 Champions League games, just 1 game behind Xavi Hernandez, Iker holds the all-time record for Spain with 162 caps, With the national team Casillas won the 2010 World Cup and Euro’s in 2008 and 2012.

Iker Casillas Club Titles

5              La Liga

2              Copa del Rey

4              Spanish Super Cup

3              UEFA Champions League

2              UEFA Super Cup

1              FIFA Club World Cup

1              Intercontinental Cup

Iker Casillas has the most appearances for Real Madrid in International competitions (162), UEFA Club competitions (157), European competitions (155), Spanish Super Cup (12), UEFA Super Cup (3) and in FIFA Club World Cup (5).

Casillas was named best goalkeeper in the world for 5 consecutive years from 2008 through 2012 and he won the World Cup Golden Glove in 2010.

One of the most iconic players in club’s history, Casillas is closing just a chapter in his career, but Real Madrid is ending a complete book. Casillas is surely  going to be missed at the white house, the Santiago Bernabeu will definitely miss his captain.

O Captain! My Captain! Our fearful trip is done,

The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won.

O Captain! My Captain! Rise up and hear the bells;

Rise up- for you the flag is flung- for you the bugle trills.

“One year after Brazil’s meltdown”

“One year after Brazil’s meltdown”

Editorial by : Jonathan Zielanowski ; Twitter ID: @Jonathan_Ziela

On July 8th 2014, Brazil lived one of their saddest nights in football history, losing 7-1 against Germany. This is their worst defeat in the history of the World Cup and they were removed from their own tournament. With this one, they have suffered 2 of the most impressive upsets in their history at home, this one along with the “Maracanazo” in 1950 losing the final game against Uruguay.

This match also marked Miroslav Klose’s 4th World Cup semifinal, becoming the 1st player ever to do so, and during the match he scored his 16th goal at World Cups surpassing the previous record of 15, held by Brazilian Ronaldo.

Both teams got to the semifinal with an undefeated record, Brazil defeated Colombia but they lost Neymar due to injury as he left the game on a stretcher while Germany defeated France in quarterfinals.

The game was played in Belo Horizonte at the Mineirão Stadium, it only took Germany 11 minutes to take the lead with a Thomas Müller goal, that goal was only the beginning of the end; at the 23rd minute Miroslave Klose scored their second (his record breaking 16th in World Cups) and it starts the longest 6 minutes of Brazilian football, one minute later Toni Kroos scored the 3rd and 2 minutes after that the 4th, after this goal, Fans began to leave the stadium. Sammy Khedira scored the 5-0 at the 29th (4 goals in just 6 minutes) a complete tragedy for Brazil.

After half time, Germany was enjoying and celebrating the victory, that didn’t matter to Andrea Schürrle who entered the game for Miroslav Klose at the 58th minute and scored twice at the 69th and 79th minutes to have a convincing lead of 7-0, Oscar scored the honor goal for Brazil at the last minute.

This is largest margin of victory in a World Cup semifinal, it was also the worst loss by a host country in World Cup history and it broke Brazil’s streak of 62 unbeaten games at home in competitive matches, dating back to 1975.

Toni Kroos was elected as the player of the match; Kroos scored two goals in 69 seconds, making it the fastest brace in the history of the FIFA World Cup.

I could keep writing about the Brazilian meltdown and how they failed or about Germany’s triumph and their complete domain and their future championship but I believe there is no need. Germany scored 7 goals, but Brazilian coach Luis Felipe Scolari described it perfectly in just 6 words:

“The worst day of my life.”

Arsenal are only as good as Giroud

With Pedro being the latest player to be linked with Arsenal, the exasperation around the Emirates continues to grow. You’d think that rumoured signings such as Pedro would bring ecstatic joy to Arsenal fans – instead it just brings his apathy. Why? As good as Pedro as, he’s not what they need: what they do need is a striker – a world-class one at that. While a marquis signing like Pedro would lift the club, as long as Giroud is the lead striker – there’s no point. There’s a saying that basically says: ‘you’re only as good as you’re weakest link’: in Arsenal’s case that weak link is a blur of French, handsome incompetence.

There are many supporters of Giroud out there who point to his qualities: his power, close range finishing and aerial ability are second to none. However, when compared to the striking options of Arsenal’s rivals, his limitations seem blatantly obvious. While Chelsea have Costa, Man City have Aguero and Man United have Rooney – Arsenal are left with Giroud. For all Chelsea’s dominance last season, if Giroud was their leading striker they wouldn’t have won the league. If Arsenal don’t replace him this summer – they will undoubtedly fall short once again.

Petr Cech was undoubtedly a terrific signing – his arrival resolves the other problem area for the North London side. Suggestions have been made for a new defensive midfielder and central defender: that would be ideal for Arsenal but not the immediate target. The Gunners are short in those two areas, yet they have enough to get by. They’re fine in the midfield area providing Francis Coquelin stays fit; similarly well stocked enough in defence depending on the fitness of Koscielny and Gabriel. Whereas in attack, with Giroud constantly laying the ball off to the other team, Arsenal are always going to struggle.

So who do they need?

The problem for the Gunners is the lack of any real quality alternatives. There are several top-drawer strikers out there, however, finding a top-drawer striker and one that wants to join Arsenal are two very different propositions. Benzema and Ibrahimovic have been rumoured – that seems about as likely as Giroud winning next year’s Ballon D’or. There are some more realistic options out there, but they are more realistic for a reason. Putting all your hopes on someone like Christian Benteke is a risk – a very expensive one at that.

Of all the probable targets out there, the standout one looks to be Lyon’s Alexandre Lacazette. The French international scored 26 league goals last season; add that to his pace and quick feet, he looks the perfect fit. He wouldn’t be cheap – Lyon have stated they’d want somewhere in the region of £30 million for his services. Of course it’s a risk; surely for Arsenal fans though, not having to watch Giroud blaze another one over the bar, means it’s a risk worth taking.

“9 teams looking for a golden miracle”

Editorial by : Jonathan Zielanowski ; Twitter ID: @Jonathan_Ziela

The Gold Cup in on its way, this is the 13th CONCACAF tournament, with 3 clear favorites and 9 others hoping for a miracle, the Mexican side is the most successive team with 6 titles, followed by the United States with 5 and besides them, only Canada has won a title, no other team has ever done it.

Mexico used to be the CONCACAF giant, something that has been forgotten over the years, both United States and Costa Rica have done something Mexico has been incapable to do outside of Mexican territory, that’s reaching the 5th game in a World Cup tournament. USA did it in 2002 after defeating Mexico in the round of 16 and Costa Rica made it to the quarter finals in last year’s tournament in Brazil. Mexico played the quarter finals in 1970 and 1986 (both World Cups as host).

Mexico will try to retake the crown after United States took it away from them after 2 consecutive titles in 2009 and 2011. This year’s winner will have to face Jürgen Klinsmann’s team in a final match to decide which team will take place in 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia.

Costa Rica looks like a contender, even though the will be without their starting goalkeeper Kaylor Navas due to injury (Achilles tendon), they are the best ranked team in FIFA at 14th place, Mexico is in 23rd and USA in 27th. Costa Rica surprised the entire world with a tremendous tournament in Brazil, advancing through the group stage by eliminating Italy and England; they defeated Greece and finally lost to the Netherlands in penalty kicks. Other important absences in the tournament will be Mexican players Chicharito (broken Collarbone) and Hector Moreno (foot injury) and the Mexican-American Greg Garza took the place of the experimented Brad Davis in Klinsmann’s midfield.

USA is the reigning champions, looking to get consecutive titles for the 2nd time after doing so in 2005 and 2007. At last year’s World Cup they lost in the round of 16 against Belgium but they will face this tournament with another motivation, the women’s team just won their 3rd world cup 2 days ago.

That leaves Panama, Canada, Honduras, Guatemala, Jamaica, Trinidad y Tobago, Haiti, Cuba and El Salvador as the underdogs, in 12 tournaments only one team besides Mexico and United States has managed to win a title, Canada in 2000. USA and Mexico have faced each other in 5 finals with the Mexican side winning 4 and having lost just one.

USA will try to tie Mexico with their 6th title while the Mexican team will be trying to regain their spot as the so called giants; Mexico is required to win, another failure like the one in Copa America could result in Miguel Herrera’s dismissal, that would also leave a lot of doubts looking into the World Cup qualification that will start in November 2015.

Do Real Madrid need Vidal?

vidal

He won’t be there in July 16, the day that Juventus start their preseason camp. Arturo Vidal might also miss the presentation at Vinovo in July 28, when South American players come back from the Copa America and their vacations. After his vacation, his new house might be in Madrid. In Chile the Media say a five year contract is ready for their compatriot.
Yesterday Juventus announced they haven’t received any offer from Real Madrid or any other club. But the rumors suggest there has been some contacts in recent months. Few days after the season was over, Vidal met Real Madrid representatives in the capital of Spain before his flight to Santiago for the Copa America. The Chilean left his Juve teammates like his farewell and not an arrivederci. Vidal makes €4 million a year in Italy, Real President Florentino Perez is ready to give him 5,5 million a year.
In this moment an agreement between Real Madrid and Juventus is missing. The Italian Giants are keen on a fee for more than 30 million for the midfielder. How long Vidal will remain in the Bianconeri colours remains to be seen, but will his departure helps the Blancos?
Vidal has all it takes for a demanding fan base in the Bernabeu. He will add some grit and guile to a Real Madrid midfield that lacked both. With Luka Modric and Sami Khedira out injured most of last season, Carlo Ancelotti’s side had a hard time going to one-on-one challenges and get the ball back.
The Chilean midfielder doesn’t panic in testing situations, he is a warrior with immense intelligence to prevent world-class players and a hard worker, something new Madrid manager Rafa Benitez will demand from his players next season.
Benitez could try various positions for the Chilean throughout the season, but one viable option would be to play Vidal on the right, to form the midfield line with Toni Kroos and Isco/Modric, with Jese Rodriguez moving higher on the pitch to play behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale.
Vidal will be a Galactico at the Bernabeu with his physical and mental strength, high energy and consistent runs, something that has been missing ever since Claude Makélélé left the club in 2003.

MLS attraction

With Kaka, Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard all making the recent trip across the Atlantic, the MLS must be doing something right. It’s not hard to see the attraction: glorious weather, large salaries and a new challenge would be tempting for anybody; the only doubt lies in the standard of football. The MLS has obviously vastly improved over the past few years – the Americans finally seem to be understanding why the rest of the world prefer football to baseball. Its growing popularity has created larger crowds and more TV funding, hence the reason America has been able to tempt some of the game’s greats. The question is: despite its recent improvement, is the MLS any good?

Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are obviously great players, but other than a huge trophy collection, they have one blatant similarity: they’re well past their best. Would they have made the move to America at the peak of their career? No chance. Kaka is slightly different; he was 30 when he made the move – certainly past his best – but still capable of playing for a big European club. For the MLS, he was their biggest coup. Kaka’s motivation for going there is questionable; maybe someone who’s struggled for form in the past few seasons, enjoyed the prospect of being a big fish in a small pond. If Kaka fulfils his ability – he could make his opponents look like amateurs.

So what is the likelihood of others following Kaka’s footsteps?

The Brazilian certainly added some much needed credibility to the league, however, the MLS is still a long way off most leagues in Europe. Kaka’s arrival in the States looks to be more of an anomaly as opposed to the beginning of a trend. To describe the current standard of the league: Bradley Wright-Phillips has been a revelation – scoring more goals than any other player last season – this is a guy who couldn’t cut it in the English Championship. To be brutally honest, the standard of the MLS is still poor. For some players though, that won’t be too much of an issue.

Much like Wright-Phillips, some lower league players may fancy the idea of playing alongside or against some of the legends of the game. An average player in a lower division is never going to make it to the top league in their country – the MLS offers a higher wage for a lesser standard – with the added bonus of seeing Kaka breeze past you. Maybe the lower leagues is where MLS teams should be looking; it would result in a gradual improvement as opposed to poor players amongst superstars.

For the time being and the foreseeable future, the MLS is a long way off the calibre of Europe. In some matches, Steven Gerrard will look like a celebrity, making a charity appearance for a semi-pro team. However, given the stark improvement over the last 15 years, who knows how good it will be in another 15 years. For as long as I live, I can’t see the MLS ever overtaking the Premier League or La Liga – for the Americans – signings like Kaka no longer being such a rarity has to be the long term aim. Either way, they’ll still probably get further than England at the World Cup.

Inter’s rebuilding

Geoffrey KondogbiaEver since Geoffrey Kondogbia joined Inter last week, the Nerazzurri fans will have been pinching themselves at how they managed to sign such a brilliantly gifted midfielder.

Inter signed Kondogbia from Monaco in a move that was the third highest in the club’s history, behind Hernan Crespo and Christian Vieri, in a deal reported around €40 million. With a passing accuracy of 85.7 percent, the 22-year-old will be protagonist in Roberto Mancini’s squad. He is strong, long distance shooter, Under-20 World Cup winner, professional, sticks to his job and leads by example. Kondogbia is already one of the best central midfielders in Europe.
The Nerazzurri also signed defender Joao Miranda, 31, from Atletico Madrid for €15 million. The Brazilian is one of the reasons behind Atletico’s success over the past few seasons. He is careful, experienced, strong in the air and will form one of the best central-defenders pair with Nemanja Vidic.
Add Barcelona’s Martin Montoya and Granada’s Jeison Murillo to new signing, and one would find out Inter have had a busy summer strengthening their team, when it is just the begging of July, and they aren’t done yet. The club also want another midfielder and a winger, with Steven Jovetic and Juan Cuadrado among names that have been mentioned.
Inter’s massive spending so far this summer shows president Erick Thohir is aiming a top-three finish for this season’s Serie A to reach the Champions League again. It’s only natural that there are doubts over lnter’s ability to compete for the Serie A title with Juventus. But they’re going to be a far more realistic proposition to reach the Champions League spot than they have been for several years.
